Philosophy

Students in Grades Five and Six need to develop techniques that will enable them to become successful, independent learners. The purpose of this program is to help students acquire good study habits and explore problem-solving strategies.

Topics covered in the study skills portion of the course include note taking, writing, test taking, listening, organization, and time management. Discussions will encourage students to reflect on and respond to informed yet divergent ideas. Students expand their writing skills through elaboration strategies.

In addition, students will practice for the Laura P. Mulfeld Spelling Bee, the public speaking contest, and review cursive letter formation. Educational exercises and computer activities that require the use of logic and other higher level thinking strategieswill be incorporated into the course throughout the year.
