Computer

Philosophy

Students learn fundamental computer skills more effectively if computers become part of their daily lives. Teachers integrate the use of computers into their lessons as appropriate to enhance the experience of the student. In all disciplines, students learn how to use the computer effectively for research and problem-solving.

During their lunch periods and study halls, and after school, students have access to the computer labs, which combined have twenty-one terminals. In addition, students learn how to use computers efficiently and effectively to enhance and deepen their work during study skills classes. Form II students have e-mail accounts, which gives them another avenue to communicate with faculty and fellow classmates. In addition, basic typing and word processing skills are taught and reinforced through the study skills program.

Grade Five

Grade Five meets twice per week with the computer specialist in Browning’s computer lab. Students refresh and practice their keyboarding skills using a various keyboarding applications. They learn to use the best technological tools available through more in-depth study of applications already covered in previous grades. A section of the course focuses on ethical standards and acceptable use of technology. Much attention is given to Internet safety and media literacy. iChat is used to provide a controlled environment for instant messaging in addition to furthering typing goals. Guided web searches provide the students with experience gathering reliable resources. Discussions on real-time Internet experience are encouraged. In addition to above-mentioned items, support is given to the annual Latin America Project. On completing Grade Five, students take a standards-based exam to ensure proficiency.

Grade Six

Meeting once per week, Grade Six is where the boys are asked to be critical thinkers. The boys are introduced to MicroWorlds and Inspiration. Media literacy is a crucial part of the curriculum. MicroWorlds introduces computer programming to the students. Through programming, the students develop reasoning skills while reinforcing geometrical ideas discussed in Sixth Grade Math. Inspiration reinforces concepts discussed in Enrichment and Study Skills. In-depth conversations and examination of Internet safety is a vital thread of the curriculum. Skills acquired are put into practice with the goal that these abilities become commonplace and transparent. Finally, the year is accented with refinement of keyboarding skills.
