Philosophy

Students in Grades Five and Six need to develop techniques that will enable them to become successful, independent learners. The purpose of this program is to help students acquire good study habits and explore problem-solving strategies.

Topics covered in the study skills portion of the course include note-taking, writing, test-taking, listening, organization, computer, and time management. Discussions will encourage students to reflect on and respond to informed, yet divergent ideas. Students learn organizational strategies that prepare them to write a term paper. In addition, students will prepare for the Middle School Spelling Bee and participate in class competitions.

Educational exercises and computer activities that require the use of logic and other higher level thinking strategies will be incorporated into the course throughout the year.
