Computer

The computer network at Browning is an integral part of the boys’ academic program. E-mail and Internet connectivity, as well as specific software applications, have joined the traditional word processor as important tools in the education of Upper School boys. Academic classes will often meet in the Computer Lab; research projects will incorporate electronic as well as printed sources; and course requirements may prompt boys to spend study halls or free time in the Computer Lab (which is open for independent work during supervised periods).

In addition to the regular academic offerings using the computers, independent study in computer programming, web site creation, and computer graphics may be offered depending on interest. The Department of Information Technology works in close coordination with classroom teachers and the division heads to adapt Browning’s offerings to the needs of its current students. For example, the Form III Public Speaking class, taught in the Computer Lab, seeks to prepare students to speak with confidence in front of an audience. The course includes a trimester long component devoted to multimedia presentation skills and discussions on the social use of computers. The end goal is to prepare the student for all forms of presentation, live in the boardroom and online in social communities. Students become familiar with various forms of digital media and discuss items like ethical and social responsibility, as well long term effects and implications of all forms of internet/online presentations.
