PA Volunteers
Browning parents play a key role in the various events sponsored by the Parents Association. We welcome all volunteers for the activities listed below. Please contact your Class Representative (as listed in the school directory) if you would like to become involved.
Book Fair
The Browning Book Fair is an annual school-wide event that promotes the love of reading while raising funds to support the school library. The two-day event usually occurs in late October. We include in this special event a cocktail party to which we invite authors, alumni, and past and current parents.
Blazer Exchange
Donations of gently-used gentlemanly clothing (blazers, Browning polo shirts, turtlenecks, belts, ties, dress shirts) are for sale in the spring. Proceeds go to charity.
Browning General Store
The Browning General Store sells all Browning School items for our boys. The store has backpacks, gym bags, tote bags, hats, sweats, mouse pads, pencils, banners, footballs, and more. Items are sold on the first two days of school and monthly after the PA meetings. The order form will soon be available for online ordering.
Chess Coordinators
There are three components to the chess program: Chess in the classroom (PP-2); Chess club; and Participation in local, state, and national tournaments. The PA chess representatives coordinate all activities between the Browning School, the coaches and the chess community. They also report chess activities at monthly PA meetings when applicable.
Dinners/Breakfasts
The Lower School Father/Son Dinners take place in late January and are held in the lower and upper cafeteria. Dads and their sons have the opportunity to spend a few hours together at school without mom!
The Middle School Parent/Son Breakfast is a buffet breakfast for MS parents and their sons. It is held in March in the lower gym. Parents can then visit the Art Fair.
The Upper School Parent/Son Breakfast is a buffet breakfast for US parents and their sons. It is held in March in the lower gym. Parents can then visit the Art Fair.
Field Days
Field Day usually occurs in early May for Lower School, and in late April for Middle and Upper School. The school coordinates these annual events. Class reps assist the school in the process.
Holiday Party
The Holiday Party is an annual school-wide event that celebrates the holiday season with our Browning families. The lower gym is transformed into a "winter wonderland" with white tulle cascading from the ceiling and spectacular Browning artwork on display. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are flowing. Holiday gifts made by Browning parents are sold in the lobby as well. This event takes place on the 2°d Friday in December from 6-8PM.
Ice Skating Party
This joint Browning/Marymount event takes place during the 2nd week of February at Wollman Rink in Central Park. It is truly an "evening under the stars". Non-skaters are welcome!
Joint Schools
Joint Schools Activities, Inc. (JSA) is a non-profit organization created and supported by the Parent Associations of Independent Schools in Manhattan and Riverdale. Their mission is to advocate interest-based and age-appropriate activities for teenagers and to provide a broad-based range of opportunities for socialization through common experiences.
There are 4 reps for Middle School ( 5th, 6th, Form I and Form II). They usually serve for 2 years.
There are 2 reps for the Upper School who serve for several years.
Mailing Committee
The mailing committee meets on an as-needed basis. Our chairs and their volunteers coordinate, organize and label all PA mailings for events. The committee meets at drop-off and usually ends by 10:00 AM.
New Parents Committee
Dinner
The New Parents Dinner is an annual event that welcomes all new families to the Browning School. There are cocktails served by "Browning Dad Bartenders" and a sit-down dinner by candlelight that is served by US Browning boys. The dinner is held in the lower gym and upper cafeteria and takes place on a Tuesday evening, usually the 2nd or 3rd week of September.
Correspondence
These reps send written notes to new parents in their division and call them individually to answer any questions and/or concerns they may have during the summer. There is one rep for each division.
Parents in Action www.parentsinaction.org
NYC Parents in Action is a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1979 to represent parents of New York metropolitan area independent schools. It is committed to the belief that communication between parent and child is the most effective tool in producing a healthy environment in which our children can develop into mature, responsible, energetic young adults. NYC Parents in Action serves as an information resource and explores and expands ways in which students and schools can better communicate with each other.
We have a parent rep to represent our school.
Parents League of New York www.parentsleague.org
Parents League is a non-profit organization of parents and independent schools that help you rise to the many challenges of raising children in New York.
We have a parent rep to represent our school.
Project Cicero
The goal of Project Cicero is to supplement and create libraries for children in under-resourced NYC public schools, pediatric hospital units, homeless shelters, community centers, and wherever there is a need. Browning is one of over fifty NYC independent, public, and parochial schools to participate. We collect new and gently-used hardcover and paperback books in boxes set-up in the lobby. The event usually takes place the first week of March.
Safety Net
Walking Safety Patrol is a requirement of every parent with a child in a NYC independent school. This program increases the safety of each of our sons. We count on your participation for one hour (3-4 PM) each year for each child.
Browning Benefit
The Spring Benefit is the Parents Association’s single most important fundraising activity. The planning of the event takes place throughout the course of the school year. Funds raised by this event are allocated to a specific cause. This event is Browning's PA at its best, when the entire community comes together to support our sons and their school.
Benefit Raffle
The Spring Raffle is a wonderful event for the school and is loved by our sons. We provide a pizza party for the class that sells the most raffle tickets - and it is amazing what a pizza can do!
Benefit Journal
The Spring Benefit Journal is a most significant part of the fundraising activity of the Spring Benefit for the advertising revenue it generates. The PA chairs work throughout the year to generate business ads, family greetings, and community support for our school.
All parents are welcome to attend meetings of the Parents Association.
